Mobility Monitor 2011

Welcome to the Mobility Monitor survey results.

During all the events Mobile Mentor sponsored in 2011 in Australia and New Zealand, we asked delegates from enterprise and government organisations about their mobile strategies and mobile management practices.

The results indicate that CIO's are starting to use mobile to engage with external customers. However, the survey also shows that internal mobile management practices are not yet mature and require the CIO's attention.

The Survey

The survey started off by asking respondents about the way CIOs took advantage of the opportunities that mobile technology is bringing today. Our survey showed that many delegates are already using mobile technology as a channel for customer service (27%) with a further 33% using it for marketing.

Similar findings come from Gartner research citing a race by enterprises to push out applications ‘as a competitive tool to improve (customer) relationships and gain advantage over competitors whose interfaces are purely browser-based.’ Consequently the trend of using mobile to interact with customers is related to the importance of application development and roll-out, as shown in the next question we asked our respondents in the survey.

From discussing the mobile opportunity the survey turned to ask delegates about mobile management.  In a news release issued in the week leading up to the NZ 2011 CIO Summit, Gartner discusses the need for Mobile Management: "The complexity of these (mobile) devices and platforms is driving the need to get a better handle on mobile devices".  However, despite the growing awareness of Mobile Device Management solutions, a large number of organisations in our survey (33%) currently allow their mobile devices to be unmanaged by their IT department ('not managed / managed by the user')

A second area of mobile management that respondents have not yet implemented sufficiently is mobile expense management. Despite significant cost savings that can be gained from such a solution (by some estimated around 15% on average) a large percentage(46%) of the respondents review their bills manually every month, with a further 8% of respondents not managing mobile expenses at all.

In conclusion, the survey indicates the conflicting demands on CIOs, with much of the focus and energy at the moment going into using mobile for external customer engagement whilst internal mobile management is needing more attention.
